public seating

A design for modular public seating explored in the furniture design class. Laminated bent plywood seats interlock a tubular steel frame. The design evolved into its final version through much trial and error during the fabrication process. Difficulty with the bending threshold of the plywood and the stability of the frame led to a simple bench form that locked into a solid, heavy base. Multiple tests determined the optimum cantilever of the seat, proving itself at over 350 lbs. Final prototype features 1” thick bent birch plywood seats and a 3” stainless tube frame with walnut plywood sides.
