wine cellar
2007 - knoxville, tennessee
project description:
The experience of retrieving a bottle of wine from an outdoor wine cellar is reinterpreted in this wine room for a private residence. The design called for the conversion of a 25sf half bathroom to a wine display and storage space. The existing toilet and lavatory were removed and replaced with a 3/4” natural slate counter top with a wine cooler below. The existing wood floor was replaced with 12”x12” natural slate tile. The walls and ceiling are clad in Brazilian teak floor boards lightly coated with polyurethane. The left wall has black steel wine racks with a potential capacity for 80+ bottles stored flat against the wood surface. A custom fabricated black steel channel allows a 5’ LED strip light to be recessed into the ceiling. Light level is controlled with an illuminated button set into a teak board on the wall. The ceiling profile recalls peaked roof shapes of outdoor wine cellars, while the placement of the LED light creates a dramatic effect, reminiscent of sunlight streaming through gaps in an old wood structure.
